Donald is taken from just after Goofy rejoins the group after the battle with Demyx in KH2.
Personality: Donald has a huge ego. He is, after all, the court magician, and he thinks his mission is important enough to use another person – Sora – in its completion. It is due to this ego and due to him being rather headstrong that causes him to charge into things, even when he doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing. This is demonstrated by the way he rushes into battle against the heartless, getting defeated by the easiest of them right off the bat.
Donald is also very greedy, happily taking a gem from the Cave of Wonders from Abu, wanting a reward for what they do, and even expecting the Emperor of China and Auron to pay him, Sora, and Goofy back in some way. He has no shame, feeling free to run forward to spy on Belle and Beast, or speak up when people obviously have feelings for each other. He’s also got quite the temper, yelling and flailing when it suits him, even zapping Goofy when Goofy doesn’t wake up fast enough for him.
On the other hand, though, Donald is fiercely loyal. He doesn’t question for a moment doing as the King asked or searching for the King. He could have stayed in comfort in the palace. Donald did not. At any point, Donald could have abandoned Goofy, and he knows Goofy’s forgiving enough that nothing would come of it. Donald is also not afraid to change his mind. Through their adventures he grows to care for Sora, and accepts the boy he originally wanted to use. With that loyalty is a bit of a protective side. Donald will throw himself into danger for Mickey, Goofy, Sora, and Daisy. When Goofy seemed to fall in battle, Donald heedlessly attacked the Heartless he could find, having failed his friend. He has a big heart, even though he tries to hide it and cover up for it. In order to hide his emotions after Goofy returned, he hits his friend as hard as he could with his wand, but this really only demonstrates further how much Donald cares.
It doesn’t take much time for Donald to warm up to someone who isn’t asking anything of him. But if they want something, he will be suspicious. And it takes a long time for someone to become important to him, but he’s also got a bit of a hero complex. If he can save the day and look good, he’ll go for it. Sure, he’ll hope for a reward, but he won’t demand one.
His intelligence is very high. Donald alone of the three knew that Mulan was a girl upon first sight, while Goofy and Sora were fooled. He’s the one that remembers the Nobodies have no hearts in the heat of battle. He’ll charge in before he understands what’s going on, but he’ll be thinking in the middle of the rush.
Background: Donald was living a nice, relaxed life as the court magician for King Mickey when King Mickey ran off, leaving a note behind telling him and Goofy to find a key. Donald freaked out, failed to keep things a secret from Queen Minnie and the Lady Daisy, and got sent off to find King Mickey and/or the key with Goofy. While not pleased by this turn of events, Donald was determined, and started looking.
In Transverse Town, where Donald’s cousins Huey, Dewy, and Loius run a shop for his uncle Scrooge, he and Goofy find out more information about Ansem and the keyblade. Upon running into Heartless, Donald gets his butt kicked, and lands near Sora, who wields a key. The three wind up fighting Heartless together. After that, when Sora expresses a desire to find his friends, Donald sees an opportunity to use him to find King Mickey. Donald enables Sora to use magic, and they’re off.
They travel through several worlds, discovering that the Disney villains are using the Princesses to try to access Kingdom Hearts, and eventually discover that ‘Ansem’ has been using Riku for the same purpose. Eventually, Sora, Donald, and Goofy defeat Ansem, and watch as King Mickey and Riku help close the door to Kingdom Hearts from the inside, winding up separated yet again. Through all of this, Donald eventually comes to value Goofy and Sora as teammates, instead of being upset with them all of the time.
Donald, Sora, and Goofy continue their search for their friends. They see Heartless stir up again, even though they thought they dealt with the threat, and find out that Maleficent is behind the Heartless again, but this time there are some new players, Organization XIII. They meet King Mickey only briefly in Twilight Town, and realize that their work is not yet complete. The three work together through several worlds again, finally coming across King Mickey a third time in Hollow Bastion, where they discover that Ansem was not what he seemed.
Hollow Bastion comes under attack, and Mickey, Donald, Sora, and Goofy charge out to fight with many more friends. Sora, Donald, and Goofy are ordered to go and work on other things, but they ignore King Mickey, leaping into the fray. It’s Donald’s first act of rebellion against King Mickey, but it’s for a good cause – fighting alongside friends.
The three promptly run into Demyx. After defeating him soundly, a Heartless knocks a rock down on top of Goofy. In shock, fury, and grief, King Mickey, Donald, and Sora charge into the fray, determined to avenge their friend. They fight through a series of battles, and as they stand at the end, exhausted, accomplished, and still hurt, Goofy wanders back up to them. He was simply knocked out. Donald hits Goofy hard on the knee, but it’s an expression of affection. His friend isn’t dead.
